Housing and public services

Can a family stop starting over at every agency?

GammaLex research · Collaboration with MIT-affiliated researchers

Getting housing help means moving between agencies, programs and caseworkers. Each holds part of the picture, the pieces change, and the family is asked to rebuild it from scratch at every door.

With MIT-affiliated researchers, we are exploring whether Tauss can keep that understanding intact across agencies and over time: what has been established, what has changed, and what still needs resolving. Our first focus is affordable housing and public-service coordination in New Mexico.

From application to lease

A caseworker reopens a returning family’s file. Its records sit across the housing authority, the benefits office, a landlord, a county program and a shelter. Tauss turns them into one path.

Path to a lease

Two steps are done. Two open items hold up the unit match.

  1. Applied

    Established

Application filed with the housing authority.

  2. Income verified

    Established

Income is $3,150 a month after a new job on Mar 1.

  3. Household confirmed

    Open

The application lists three people; the benefits office lists four since Feb 12.

  4. Landlord rent letter

    Open

  5. Unit match

What the new income does

$3,150 a month, for a household of four.

  • Rental assistance

    limit $3,900

    $750 below the limit.

  • Childcare subsidy

    limit $3,300

$150 below the limit. A raise past it ends the subsidy.

  • Food assistance

    limit $4,200

The benefit falls gradually as income rises.

Next step

Confirm the household of four and ask the landlord for the rent letter again. Both clear the way to a unit match, and the county program needs the letter too.

Voice, for caseworkers and for families

Caseworkers ask by voice and hear what is holding a family up. A family can call and be met with what is already established, and what they add becomes context too.

Caseworker asks by voice

“What’s holding up this family’s lease?”

Two things: the application lists three people but the benefits office lists four, and the landlord’s rent letter never came back. Settle both and the unit match can start. Their income is $150 under the childcare limit, so plan any raise with them.

Family calls, no starting over

  • AssistantYour application is in review. Two things are still open: your landlord’s rent letter, and who lives in your household. Has anything changed at home?
  • Family memberMy mother moved in with us in February.

Becomes context

  • Household: four people, confirmed by the family and matching the benefits office.
  • Income limits and unit size recalculated for four.
  • Landlord letter still open. The next brief checks for it.
